Transfer News: Manchester United show interest in 20-year-old Dutch shot-stopper.

Manchester United ‘interested’ in Anderlecht shot-stopper Bart Verbruggen

Anderlecht and the Netherlands shot-stopper Bart Verbruggen is being eyed by Manchester United ahead of next summer, according to the Manchester Evening News.

The Red Devils are ‘interested’ in acquiring the services of the 20-year-old. In March, the young goalkeeper was handed his maiden call-up to the national side and was on the bench in the Oranje’s 3-0 win over Gibraltar in the European Championship qualifiers.

Verbruggen signed for Anderlecht in the summer of 2020. Subsequently, the shot-stopper was handed his debut for the Belgian outfit in May 2021 in a Jupiler Pro League playoff tied against Club Brugge that ended in a 2-2 draw.

However, the 20-year-old has only recently found regular game time at the Lotto Park side. In the current campaign, the Dutch national has made 24 appearances in all competitions for Brian Riemer’s team, keeping 10 clean sheets.

As things stand, David de Gea is the number one at United. The Spaniard has been our first choice for more than a decade now, having signed from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2011.

However, the 32-year-old’s current contract at the Old Trafford side is set to expire at the end of the season. While the Red Devils are confident of extending his stay, the veteran goalkeeper is not guaranteed a starting spot.

De Gea has made some impressive saves in the current campaign. However, the Spaniard has also been found wanting on a few occasions, making the joint-most errors in the Premier League this term that have led to goals.

Unfortunately, United seemingly lack depth in the goalkeeping department, with only Tom Heaton and Jack Butland at our disposal. We also have Dean Henderson on our books. But it remains to be seen what the future holds for the on-loan Nottingham Forest star.

Verbruggen is young and talented. While the 20-year-old is evidently not expected to come in and replace De Gea immediately, the youngster has the potential to act as an understudy and provide competition for a place in between the sticks.
