Kasper Schmeichel urges Manchester United to extend David de Gea contract
OGC Nice and former Leicester City shot-stopper Kasper Schmeichel has urged Manchester United to extend the contract of David de Gea.
The Spain international’s existing deal with the Red Devils is set to expire at the end of the season. As things stand, the 32-year-old;s future at the Old Trafford side is still uncertain.
However, speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football (h/t Metro), Kasper, the son of legendary United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel, believes the Red Devils will have to spend a considerable amount to replace the former Atletico Madrid star.
“I think Manchester United are looking at it in terms of what would it cost to replace him? It would cost you north of £60 million and you already have a guy who is a top-class goalkeeper and from the looks of it wants to stay, so I think they’ll reach some kind of agreement at some point.”
De Gea signed for the Old Trafford side in the summer of 2011 from Los Rojiblancos. Since then, the 32-year-old has been the Manchester-based club’s number one.
The shot-stopper has been the first choice in between the sticks for United for over a decade now. There was a period in the 32-year-old’s career with the Red Devils where he was considered the best goalkeeper in the world.
For now, the Old Trafford side have Jack Butland and Tom Heaton in their ranks as the backups. The Crystal Palace loanee is at the club until the end of the campaign, while the former Aston Villa goalkeeper is not getting any younger.
United also have Dean Henderson on their books. The England international is on loan at Nottingham Forest. However, it remains to be seen where the 26-year-old’s future lies.
De Gea has showcased his brilliant shot-stopping talent over the years. However, under Erik ten Hag, the Spaniard’s deficiencies with his distribution have come to the fore.
