Erik ten Hag tells Alejandro Garnacho he “deserved” new Manchester United contract

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has told Alejandro Garnacho that he “deserved” a new contract at the club after the youngster’s performances this season.

The 18-year-old’s previous terms were set to expire at the end of the upcoming campaign. However, he has signed a new five-year deal at the Old Trafford side until June 2028.

Speaking to the Argentine and his family (h/t Metro), Ten Hag lauded the forward for getting better, taking his chances and stepping up at United. The gaffer feels the winger’s displays in the last few months have warranted an extension.

“It’s a big, big moment, so I [will say] some words. He is improving and he has improved a lot. That is why we are now here and he deserves this, a new contract.

“It is deserved by his performance and he has fought his way into the team. So, it was a huge step and he did magnificently.”

Garnacho was signed by the Red Devils in the summer of 2020 from Atletico Madrid. He mostly played for the Old Trafford side’s youth teams in the last two campaigns.

However, Erik ten Hag’s arrival at United has seen the Argentine thrive. Initially, the Dutch manager did not seem to have a lot of faith in the youngster. However, the forward has slowly made his way into the gaffer’s plans.

The 18-year-old has put in some clutch performances over the course of the season. His stoppage-time goal against Fulham at Craven Cottage in the Premier League gave us a 2-1 victory.

Subsequently, Garnacho has put in other essential performances against the likes of Manchester City and West Ham United. The youngster has built the pedigree of being an impact substitute.

Ten Hag has an abundance of talent on the wings with the likes of Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Antony. However, the 18-year-old has been one of the first names the gaffer has called off the bench in recent months.

Garnacho’s impact in the current justifies United’s decision to tie the Argentine down and secure his future. Hopefully, Ten Hag will continue working with the forward for the coming future and help him become a world-beater at the Theatre of Dreams.
