Gary Neville believes “moaning” Bruno Fernandes “best player” at Manchester United
Manchester United icon Gary Neville believes Bruno Fernandes is the “best player” at the club but is not too pleased with the playmaker’s constant moaning.
We saw the best and worst of the Portugal international in the 1-0 win over Aston Villa in the Premier League at home on Sunday (30 April). While there were instances where the midfielder looked disgruntled, eventually, it was he who scored the only goal of the game.
Speaking on his Sky Sports podcast on YouTube (h/t Manchester Evening News), Neville, who spent his entire playing career at United, hailed Fernandes’ impact at the Old Trafford side but suggested the 28-year-old tone it down a bit on the pitch.
“I think it sums Bruno Fernandes up. He is Manchester United’s most effective player and he is Manchester United’s best player. But then I think every Manchester United fan, probably every player as well, is thinking ‘just stop moaning’.”
It was a crucial three points for the Red Devils in the race for the top four. Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur are currently chasing the Old Trafford side for the fourth spot in the table with just a few matches left.
After the setback against Spurs, where they came back from two goals down to get a draw, the win against Unai Emery’s team was encouraging.
United controlled the fixture for most of the proceedings, with the former Sporting CP star at the centre of the Red Devils’ attacking play. We created a number of opportunities in the first half.
But it was Fernandes who broke the deadlock in the 39th minute. Marcus Rashford’s tame shot was parried by Emiliano Martinez, but the Portuguese was the first one to get on the end of the follow-up and beat the keeper.
The 28-year-old has been pivotal to Erik ten Hag’s plans in the current campaign. Over the course of the season, the playmaker has been deployed in several positions, including on the wings as well as deeper in the middle of the park.

Fernandes has also been handed the captain’s armband on most occasions, with Harry Maguire on the bench. Ever since the Portuguese star’s arrival from Sporting CP, he has been essential for United. But the playmaker can often be frustrating due to his attitude at times when things are not going our way.
