Manchester United target Jurrien Timbers opens up on a potential summer move
According to De Telegraaf (h/t Mirror Football), Ajax defender Jurrien Timber has clarified his stance over a potential summer transfer move and was reminiscent of playing alongside Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez.
Timber was Erik ten Hag’s first priority target when he took over with the two working together at Ajax. A move did not materialize and Timber ended up staying with the Dutch club.
United went on to sign his former teammate Martinez in the window who has since established himself as one of the key figures in the revival at Old Trafford.
Now, Timber has shed some light on his future and relives the wonderful partnership he had with United defender Martinez when the two were at Ajax.
“A transfer is getting closer and closer, so to speak. There is a lot of concrete interest and I have made agreements with Ajax.
Last year, Ajax asked me to stay for at least one more season and to extend my contract. As a club boy I did that with love and after the season we agreed to review the situation.”
I know how great it is to play alongside Lisandro.
Though my performances don’t depend on him only. We were amazing together, especially with communication. It doesn’t surprise me that he played so good for Manchester United before his injury.”
It is pretty clear that Timber would be leaving Ajax at the end of the season with United still rumored to be keeping taps on the player.
At the same time, our rivals Liverpool have also joined the race for the player who have had disappointing season and would be looking to add more quality in their ranks.
Timber provides a very useful characteristics for teams that tend to dominate in possession as he is comfortable with his feet going into midfield and allows to play out from the back.
Similarly, he can also do a good role if moved to a full back position and provides different options to the manager.
That is one of the key factors why Ten Hag is keen to sign him with the player able to cover the right-back position if necessary and also provide invaluable depth to the centre-back position.
