On loan Manchester United striker Wout Weghorst ‘open’ to Besiktas move
Wout Weghorst, who is on loan at Manchester United from Burnley, is ‘open’ to a return to Besiktas in the upcoming transfer window, according to Spor Arena via Sabah (h/t Manchester Evening News).
If the Red Devils do not end up making the striker’s temporary move a permanent one in the coming months, he is willing to go back to Turkey.
The Super Lig outfit had the Holland international on loan during the first half of the 2022/23 season. However, the Old Trafford side paid a compensation fee to the Istanbul-based club to acquire the 30-year-old’s services.
At the end of the campaign, Weghorst will return to Burnley. However, Besiktas want to sign the forward for good next summer and he is not closed off to that idea.
The Holland international made a name for himself in the Bundesliga with Wolfsburg before making his way to the Clarets in January 2022. However, the 30-year-old’s arrival was not enough to help the Turf Moor side survive the drop.
Subsequently, Weghorst joined the Super Lig outfit last summer. At the Turkish side, the Holland international found his feet and went into the 2022 World Cup on a high.
After losing Cristiano Ronaldo midway through the campaign, Erik ten Hag was left with just one natural number nine at his disposal in Anthony Martial. Unfortunately, the French national has been injury prone since the Dutch manager’s arrival.
Therefore, we evidently need to add cover up front. Weghorst has done just that. Over the last few months, the 30-year-old has played a pivotal role at United.

However, while the Holland international’s work rate has been admirable, he is seemingly not up to the Red Devils’ standards. Thus, unless the striker is happy being the third or fourth choice at the Old Trafford side, it would be wise not to pursue him once again in the coming months. Whether Besiktas will sign the former Wolfsburg star remains to be seen.
