Newcastle United join Manchester United in race for Sporting CP defender Goncalo Inacio
Premier League rivals Newcastle United have joined Manchester United in the race for Sporting CP defender Goncalo Inacio, according to Football Insider (h/t Manchester Evening News).
The two English top-flight teams are ‘interested’ in acquiring the Portugal international’s services in the upcoming transfer window. As a result, the Red Devils and Eddie Howe’s team will look to get hold of the centre-back’s signature next summer.
However, the 21-year-old will not come cheap. The Primeira Liga outfit have set a price tag of £45 million to part ways with the talented youngster.
Inacio made his way through the youth ranks at Sporting CP before establishing himself in the first team last season. Now, the defender has become a pivotal player in Ruben Amorim’s team.
In the current campaign, the youngster has been a key player for the Lisbon-based club. The 21-year-old has made 45 appearances in all competitions for them, scoring three goals and providing three assists.
United’s backline has been steady this season. Lisandro Martinez has added stability to the Red Devils’ defence alongside Raphael Varane. The two World Cup winners have formed a formidable partnership for us.
However, against Sevilla in the first leg of the Europa League quarter-finals, the Argentine and French nationals picked up injuries. As a result, they have both been forced to the sidelines.
Thankfully, the Old Trafford side have enough depth in the centre-back areas. Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof are also at the gaffer’s disposal. They did well in the 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest. But it would not be a surprise to see them leave next summer for regular opportunities elsewhere.
