Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse is a transfer target for Manchester United
Manchester United have identified Southampton star James Ward-Prowse as a target for the upcoming transfer window, according to Football Insider (h/t Manchester Evening News).
Next summer, Erik ten Hag is looking to bolster the middle of the park with a new number eight. To that end, Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong is admired by the gaffer. However, the Spanish giants have deemed the Holland international untouchable.
As a result, the Red Devils will have to turn their attention to alternative options to reinforce the engine room. The Saints’ captain is one of the names being eyed by the Old Trafford side. Premier League rivals Newcastle United and Aston Villa also have him on their radar.
At the moment, the Hampshire-based club are in a relegation battle. A drop to the Championship will likely force the Saint Mary’s Stadium side to sell their star midfielder.
Ward-Prowse made his way through the youth ranks at Southampton and has been in and around the first team for more than a decade. Over the years, the 28-year-old has developed a keen eye for goal.
The England international has become an expert set-piece specialist. In the current campaign, the midfielder has found the back of the net nine times and has provided three assists in 36 appearances in all competitions.
United added Christian Eriksen and Casemiro to their midfield ranks in the summer of 2022. The two have become pivotal players in Ten Hag’s plans at the Old Trafford side.
However, in the Danish and Brazilian stars’ absence, we have seemingly lacked quality on the bench. The likes of Fred, Scott McTominay and Donny van de Beek have not been up to scratch. Although Marcel Sabitzer has done well on loan so far.
