Erik ten Hag explains the transfer approach Manchester United will take in the summer
Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag outlines the approach the club will take in the summer window and sounded out a bullish statement against the rising finances of other clubs.
We already know what Manchester City can do in transfer markets – basically anything. Newcastle United will slowly join that boat with their Saudi-based owners. Chelsea have spent crazily in the last two transfer windows. Does not feel like they will stop any time soon.
What we are trying to understand here is that despite United’s prestige and attraction, it will be difficult to compete with those huge financial institutions, also known as football clubs, unless our owners dip into their pockets regularly.
Here’s what ten Hag said when asked about this (h/t Manchester Evening News):
“Money is one thing, but another thing is strategy. When I was at Ajax we had a low budget in comparison to many clubs in the Champions League and still we won the groups, we came in semi-final and were close to the final. So it’s possible to beat team with higher budgets.”
The boss is right here. We can see Paris-Saint Germain as an example. The French side win their league every time because of a relative lack of competitiveness (or their massive strength). But, when the pressure is ramped in the Champions League, the team crumbles like anything.
Moreover, the way they are run gives us the feel of a soap opera. The same goes for Chelsea under Todd Boehly. Sacked Thomas Tuchel (foolish decision), hired Graham Potter, spent maniacally in January and now sacked him in April.
Although they are our main rivals, we can see how Liverpool earned their success under Jurgen Klopp through clever recruitment and excellent coaching. Though they are having a bad season, what they did in the last five years is something United can look at.

We have a coach that is good enough. Now, what needs to happen is that he gets backed in transfer markets. Once that happens, United will have a team worthy of challenging for the biggest trophies every season.
