Manchester United made a late failed bid for Morocco star Sofyan Amrabat in the January Transfer window
Manchester United showed late interest in Fiorentina and Morocco star Sofyan Amrabat in the January transfer window.
That is according to his brother and agent. who while speaking to Voetbal Premier (h/t Manchester Evening News) reveals that United, along with two other clubs, tried to sign the midfielder during the last days of the January transfer window.
“Manchester United wanted a loan with an option to buy, Fiorentina rejected. And the third was Chelsea.”
The move did not materialise and the player ended up staying at the Italian club due to a number of sides. Fiorentina were reluctant in selling their star asset this late in the window and if they agreed to sell him, there was no possibility of a loan deal.
Amrabat was a brilliant presence in Morocco’s midfield at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, where he led them to a fourth-place finish. There is no doubt that his stellar displays in the Atlas Lions’ No. 6 position was a huge factor behind their impressive defensive displays in Qatar.
Christian Eriksen’s injury made United act in the last days of the window to secure a replacement and it does seem like the recruitment team tried all possible ways to get a quality player in.
In the end, Marcel Sabitzer joined Fc Bayern Munich on a straight loan deal and till now, it does seem like a well-thought-off decision with the Austrian bedding in nicely in his new surroundings.
He scored his first goal for the club against Fulham in the FA Cup quarter-final with a cheeky backheel to give us the lead.
The midfielder has followed the good form heading into the international break and scored two goals and gave an assist while leading his national team. Certainly, the void left by Eriksen has not been missed to that extent with Sabitzer coming in.

It does look like the player’s camp is happy in the new environment and there could potentially be a permanent summer deal on the cards for the Austrian. However, as they say, never get too attached to a loan player as anything can happen in football, especially with the current transfer window climate.
With the sacking of Jurgen Nagelsmann at Bayern and the appointment of Thomas Tuchel, there could be a change of preference at the Bavarian club and Sabitzer could be integrated into their first team after the loan move ends. Only summer will clear the uncertainty surrounding the future of Sabitzer with United.
