Barcelona drop out of Ruben Neves race amidst Manchester United negotiations
Manchester United are ‘already negotiating’ with Wolverhampton Wanderers for Ruben Neves, with Barcelona dropping out of the race, according to Spanish outlet Sport (h/t Manchester Evening News).
The Portugal international’s current contract at the Molineux Stadium side is set to expire in the summer of 2024. However, the West Midlands club have no intention of parting ways with him on a free transfer.
Therefore, it looks like the 26-year-old could be on his way out of Wolves in the upcoming transfer window. The Red Devils have also been handed a boost in their pursuit of the midfielder, with the La Liga outfit having cold feet.
The Blaugrana have had second thoughts regarding Neves due to their fans being unsure about his move to La Liga. Xavi, the manager of the Camp Nou side, is also undecided about whether the Portuguese is as good as Sergio Busquets.
Barcelona already have an abundance of talent in the middle of the park. The Spanish giants have the likes of Frenkie de Jong, Pedri, Gavi and Frank Kessie in their ranks.
Neves signed for the Molineux Stadium side in the summer of 2017 from FC Porto. Over the years, the midfielder has helped the West Midlands club get promoted to the Premier League and stay in it.
The 26-year-old has developed into a quality player during his time at Wolves. Recently, he played a part in Portugal’s wins over Liechtenstein and Luxembourg during the international break.
In the summer of 2022, United signed Casemiro and Christian Eriksen to add reinforcements to the engine room. While the two have been impressive, the Red Devils seem to lack quality on the bench, with the likes of Fred, Scott McTominay and Donny van de Beek at Erik ten Hag’s disposal.
