Manchester United join transfer battle for Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic
Manchester United have ‘joined’ other Premier League rivals in a battle to sign Chelsea star Mateo Kovacic in the upcoming transfer window, according to 90min (h/t Manchester Evening News).
Apart from the Red Devils, English top-flight outfits Liverpool and Manchester City are pursuing the Croatia international’s signature as well. The 28-year-old’s current contract with the Blues is set to expire in the summer of 2024 (transfermarkt).
At the moment, the Old Trafford side are ‘exploring’ the possibility of acquiring Kovacic’s services. The Croatian is seen as a possible alternative to Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong.
Next summer, United will look to bolster the middle of the park. The signing of a new central midfielder will be one of the club’s main objectives at the end of the season.
Kovacic has played for some of the biggest clubs in the world. After establishing himself at Inter Milan, the 28-year-old got a move to Real Madrid in the summer of 2015.
However, at the La Liga outfit, he was unable to break into their starting lineup due to the competition for places. Subsequently, the Croatian left Los Blancos after three seasons and joined Chelsea.
With the Blues, the midfielder has enjoyed a fruitful spell over the years. The technically gifted star has been one of the best players at the Stamford Bridge side in recent campaigns.
However, the Blues have bought a lot of players in the last two transfer windows. In January, they signed Enzo Fernandez from Benfica. Graham Potter has other options like N’Golo Kante at his disposal as well.

United signed Casemiro and Christian Eriksen last summer. However, we seemingly lack quality in depth in the engine room. If Kovacic is available on a cut-price deal in the coming months, hopefully, the Old Trafford side will pursue his signature.
