Preston North End to discuss Alvaro Fernandez future with Manchester United
Ryan Lowe, the manager of Preston North End, has revealed that they will have a meeting with Manchester United to discuss the future of on-loan star Alvaro Fernandez.
The 19-year-old joined the Championship outfit in the summer of 2022 on a temporary move. Over the course of the season, the youngster has been impressive at the Lancashire-based club.
Speaking to LancsLive (h/t Manchester Evening News), Lowe confirmed that PNE would meet with the parent clubs of players who are on loan at the club.
“We will sit down and have a review with Man United and all of the loan players’ (clubs). We will see what they think, what we think, and then, if there’s an opportunity to do something with the loan lads who are with us and doing well, then why wouldn’t you? But, it’s not always the case.”
The Championship outfit have had a decent campaign so far. They are in the middle of the table and still have a chance to get into a playoff spot.
Fernandez has been a key player for Lowe this term. The Spain U19 international has made 33 appearances in all competitions for the Lancashire-based club, chipping in with four assists.
United signed the left-back in 2020. Subsequently, the 19-year-old developed in the Red Devils’ youth sides. Last season, the youngster was named the Old Trafford side’s U23 Player of the Year.
At the moment, Erik ten Hag has relied on Luke Shaw on the left-hand side of the defence most often. The England international has been impressive under the Dutch manager. Over the last few months, the 27-year-old has also played as a central defender.
Tyrell Malacia is another player the gaffer can call upon. Initially, the Holland international was chosen ahead of Shaw. However, the 23-year-old has fallen down the pecking order in recent weeks due to the former Southampton star’s performances.

For now, United have two decent options to choose from at left-back. Therefore, Fernandez does not seem to be required. It would be wise to let the player stay at PNE or loan him out to another team next summer to help the youngster gain experience.
