Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag on the role of Wout Weghorst in the team
Speaking to the Manchester United website, Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag talked about the performances of Wout Weghorst and what he wants from the Dutch striker.
Since arriving on loan in the January window, Weghorst has been used in different positions. He is a striker but has played as a number 10 and as an attacking number eight at times in his short spell at Old Trafford so far.
The Netherlands international has two goals and two assists in 15 appearances in all competitions (the second of his goal coming against Real Betis on Thursday). While goal scoring is his duty as a striker, ten Hag has wanted him to play a different role here with Marcus Rashford doing the bulk of the scoring.
Here’s what the manager said when asked about Weghorst and his role (h/t Manchester United website):
“Of course, what I expect him to do is get in the right positions and he is often there, also to make often space, create space for others. Of course, a striker needs finishes. You need to net. That is your main job and he knows that and you have to take responsibility for it. So it’s important he gets a second goal, now he has to move forward.”
We know that the 30-year-old is not the long-term solution to our centre-forward issues. With all due respect to him, he does have a limited skillset to be playing for a club like Manchester United on a weekly basis.
But, credit must be given to the Burnley striker for giving his all in a United shirt and doing well when asked to do a certain job by the manager.
Although the league title may be a far-reached dream this season, we still are fighting for the remaining cup competitions after lifting the Carabao Cup two weeks ago.
So, we would need the likes of Weghorst and others to continue their good work and keep their focus intact.

Irrespective of what the Dutchman does from now till May, United must sign a striker in the summer to support Rashford and Bruno Fernandes in the forward line. Harry Kane seems to be the optimum target for ten Hag.
