Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount added to Manchester United summer transfer shortlist
Manchester United have added Mason Mount, who plays for Premier League rivals Chelsea, to their summer transfer shortlist, according to The Guardian.
At the moment, the 24-year-old’s current contract at the Blues expires in the summer of 2024. The two parties are yet to agree new terms to extend the attacking midfielder’s stay at the Stamford Bridge side.
With the England international’s talks with the West London club over a new deal stalling, they could opt to sell him. Liverpool are another team in the English top-flight eyeing the playmaker. Italian giants Juventus and Bundesliga outfit Bayern Munich are also interested.
Chelsea owner Todd Boehly does not want players to enter the final year of their contract and potentially let them leave for free. As a result, Mount could be available for about £50 million.
Erik ten Hag is keen on getting a world-class number nine in the upcoming transfer window. To that end, Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane is the Dutch manager’s preferred option. However, the 29-year-old will not come cheap.
United are also keen on a new midfielder. Borussia Dortmund star Jude Bellingham is on the club’s radar. But if the Red Devils are successful in prising Kane away from Spurs, Mount could be a cheaper alternative to the former Birmingham City youngster.
The 24-year-old has been one of the Blues’ best players in the last two campaigns. However, under Graham Potter, the England international has lost his place in the starting lineup.
Last summer, the Old Trafford side ended up getting a hold of Casemiro and Christian Eriksen. While the Brazilian has cemented his place in the number six position, we could evidently do with another creative player in the middle of the park.
