Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has asked for patience regarding the return of Anthony Martial after his injury issues in the current campaign.

The 27-year-old last featured for the Red Devils in the Premier League in 2-1 win over Manchester City in the derby. However, the France international had to be withdrawn at half-time.

Subsequently, the former AS Monaco star played for around half an hour against Nottingham Forest in the second leg of the semi-final in the Carabao Cup. But he has been on the sidelines with a hip injury since and only recently started individual training sessions.

Speaking to the media via Manchester Evening News, Ten Hag is unsure of whether Martial will return to action in the next two-and-a-half weeks. The Dutch manager instead wants the striker to focus on his recovery.

“I hope but I don’t give an expectation about that. Let him do his work. Several times now then he drops back too quickly. Give him the time.”

In the previous campaign, the French national lost his place in the team and opted to join Sevilla on loan in January. However, he did not have a fruitful spell in Spain.

Upon the 27-year-old’s return to Manchester, he was impressive during pre-season. Unfortunately, his first setback of the campaign came in one of the friendlies.

Since then, Martial has been in and out of the team due to his fitness problems. The French national has not completed 90 minutes for Erik ten Hag in any competitive game at the Old Trafford side.

While the 27-year-old has been decent when called upon, his availability has been few and far between this season. The striker has made just 14 appearances in all competitions in the current campaign, scoring six goals and providing two assists.

United signed Wout Weghorst in January to reinforce the attack. The 30-year-old has featured heavily in recent weeks due to a lack of options in the squad for the number nine position.

For now, Ten Hag has managed to find a winning formula with the former Wolfsburg star in the team. But hopefully, Martial will be able to get back to full fitness soon and contribute to our success for the rest of the campaign.
