Manchester United ‘pull the plug’ on permanent Wout Weghorst transfer
Manchester United are set to ‘pull the plug’ on a permanent transfer for Wout Weghorst, who is on loan at the Red Devils from Burnley, according to Football Insider (h/t Manchester Evening News).
The Holland international joined the Old Trafford side from the Championship outfit in January until the end of the season. However, the Manchester-based club do not have the option or obligation to sign the striker.
United lost Cristiano Ronaldo earlier in the campaign. The 38-year-old’s untimely departure left the Red Devils short-staffed up top. While the Portugal international has lost his place in the starting lineup under Erik ten Hag, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner was still a key player.
As a result, the Old Trafford side were left with Anthony Martial as the only natural striker in the squad. Unfortunately, the France international has been unavailable for most of the season due to fitness issues.
The 27-year-old has been pivotal to the Dutch manager’s plans whenever he has been unavailable. However, the strike has not managed to complete 90 minutes in any fixture in the current campaign.
Subsequently, in the previous transfer window, Weghorst was brought in to bolster the forward line. With Martial’s injuries, the 30-year-old has been pivotal in recent matches.
The Holland international made a name for himself as a prolific goalscorer at Wolfsburg. In January 2022, Burnley made a move for the tall forward. But his time with the Clarets has not been fruitful.
At United, Weghorst has played as a striker as well as in the number 10 position. While he has not been able to find the back of the net on a consistent basis, the 30-year-old has worked his socks off.

The Holland international’s work rate has been admirable at the Old Trafford side. However, it looks like the Red Devils are not keen on having him on their books beyond this term. But a striker like him has the qualities to be a decent squad player at the club.
