Ruud van Nistelrooy slams Cody Gakpo for snubbing “dream” Manchester United move for Liverpool
PSV Eindhoven manager Ruud van Nistelrooy has slammed Cody Gakpo for snubbing his “dream” Manchester United move for Liverpool in January.
The 23-year-old joined the Merseyside outfit in the previous transfer window. However, things have not been easy for the Holland international in England as of yet.
Speaking to the media via The Sun, Van Nistelrooy, who spent five years at the Old Trafford side during his playing career, revealed that Gakpo aspired for a switch to the Red Devils. The ex-striker had advised the 23-year-old to wait for the summer.
“Gakpo’s dream move was Man United. I advised him to wait until the summer. Something happened and he refused my advice and listened to Virgil van Dijk who tempted him to join his team.”
The Holland international made his way through the youth ranks at the Red and Whites. In the previous campaign, the forward broke into the Eredivisie outfit’s first team.
This season, Gakpo was in fine form at PSV. In 24 appearances in all competitions for Van Nistelrooy’s team, he scored 13 goals and provided 17 assists.
The 23-year-old also had a promising 2022 World Cup campaign. He scored in every group-stage fixture for the Netherlands in Qatar. In the end, Louis van Gaal’s team lost to Argentina in the quarter-finals.
However, since the Holland international’s move to Liverpool, in six appearances in all competitions, he has failed to find the back of the net or set up any teammate.
Jurgen Klopp’s team have been struggling this season. The Merseysiders have dropped off considerably since previous years under the German head coach. Their forward line, which consists of the likes of Mohammed Salah and Darwin Nunez, has been misfiring as well.

Last month, United signed Wout Weghorst on loan. While we could have done with a forward like Gakpo in the team, the management opted against it. Thankfully, the Red Devils seem to have dodged a bullet, with the 23-year-old unable to make an impact in the English top flight.
