Manchester United face competition from Chelsea for FC Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa
Premier League rivals Chelsea are set to compete with Manchester United for the signing of FC Porto star Diogo Costa, according to 90min (h/t football.london).
The Blues are interested in signing the 23-year-old from the Dragoes. Graham Potter’s team have sent scouts to Portugal to watch the shot-stopper’s displays for Sérgio Conceicao’s team.
However, the Red Devils are also looking to acquire Costa’s services. Also, Tottenham Hotspur have the goalkeeper on their radar.
Chelsea currently have two established shot-stoppers, Kepa Arrizabalaga and Edouard Mendy, in their ranks. However, the two have been underwhelming during their time in West London.
The Spain international is currently ahead of the Senegalese in the pecking order at the Stamford Bridge side. After the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations winner’s dip in form in recent months, the former Athletic Bilbao has reclaimed his place in between the sticks.
Spurs are looking for replacements for Hugo Lloris. The 36-year-old is in the final stages of his career. In the current campaign, the France international has made some errors in goal for the North London side.
As for United, we are also eyeing a successor to David de Gea. The Spain international has been one of our best players since last season. Although, the Spaniard still leaves a lot to be desired with the ball at his feet.
Erik ten Hag has seemingly emphasised on playing out from the back at the Old Trafford side. Therefore, a goalkeeper’s distribution is evidently an important factor for the Dutch manager’s style to thrive.

Therefore, it remains to be seen whether the Red Devils will count on De Gea for the next campaign. Costa looks like a wise option considering his age and ability on the ball to succeed the former Atletico Madrid at the Theatre of Dreams.
