Manchester United loanee Dean Henderson refused to cut short his temporary move at Nottingham Forest and return to the Old Trafford side in January, according to the Mirror.

The Red Devils lost Martin Dubravak in the previous transfer window. The Slovakia international was recalled by Newcastle United last month.

As a result, United were left with just two established shot-stoppers. Subsequently, Erik ten Hag spoke with Henderson about finishing the rest of the season with the Manchester-based club.

The 25-year-old was told that a move back to the Old Trafford side would better serve his development. However, the England international was not interested.

Henderson has enjoyed a fruitful spell with the Tricky Trees. He joined Steve Cooper’s team in the summer of 2022 on loan for the rest of the season after struggling for game time at Man United in the previous campaign.

In contrast to being a bit-part player at the Old Trafford side in the last term, this season, the 25-year-old has made 20 appearances in all competitions for the West Bridgford side. He has kept six clean sheets.

At Man United, Henderson played second fiddle to David de Gea. The English national was unable to pip the Spaniard in the pecking order after returning from his successful loan spell at Sheffield United.

In the end, the Red Devils signed Jack Butland on loan from Crystal Palace to add depth to the goalkeeping department. Apart from the 29-year-old, Erik ten Hag can also call upon Tom Heaton.

It seems the best option was to let Henderson see out his time at Forest. The England international has been provided regular minutes by Copper. Hopefully, the 25-year-old will return to Manchester in the summer as a better keeper.
