Tottenham Hotspur have entered the race for Manchester United target David Raya

According to Telegraph Sport (Subscription Required), Tottenham Hotspur have entered the race for Brentford goalkeeper David Raya, who has also been linked with Manchester United.

De Gea is a United legend in all regards but many believe that he is not suited for the role needed by Erik ten Hag and therefore the club is looking at other options.

One of the targets is De Gea’s Spain national teammate Raya, who has earned plaudits over his ability to play out from the back at Brentford.

Modern football requires all eleven players, including the goalkeeper, to be comfortable with the ball; this is an area where De Gea continues to struggle.

It was evident in our first two defeats to Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford where the team tried to play out from the back and it was a disaster.

Since then, Ten Hag opted to play long on occasion rather than build from the back, which suits De Gea’s style of play.

However, in no manner, it aligns with the philosophy of the manager and therefore is just seen as a stop-gap until a unique solution is found.

Raya presents that opportunity, having been impressive for Brentford ever since the club gained promotion to the Premier League and is a very talented keeper.

Another advantage for the interested clubs is that Raya’s current contract at Brentford expires in June 2024 (Transfermarkt) and hence the summer transfer window could be the perfect opportunity to test Brentford’s resilience in keeping hold of the player.

At 27 years of age, he has the potential to lead the line for a top club and it would be a battle among Premier League’s top clubs United, Spurs and Chelsea over the goalkeeper.
