Erik ten Hag hails impact Fred has had off the bench at Manchester United this season
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has hailed the impact Fred has had this season while coming on as a substitute. The Dutch gaffer is pleased to have someone like the Brazilian in the squad.
The 29-year-old has gone down the pecking order under the new gaffer. However, whenever the midfielder has been called upon, he has brought energy to the game.
Speaking on the club’s official website (h/t Manchester Evening News), Ten Hag has showered praise on Fred for his industry and tenacity. The Dutch manager is delighted to have someone of the Brazilian’s ilk at his disposal.
“Every time when he’s coming on, he’s ready. He’s front foot and he brings the right quality to the game. That is great to have that as a team and as a manager.”
The 29-year-old signed for the Red Devils in the summer of 2018 from Shakhtar Donetsk. Since then, the midfielder has been an important player in the squad for various managers.
In the previous campaign, Fred put in some brilliant displays when Ralf Rangnick played him a bit further in the middle of the park. The Brazilian caught a lot of people’s attention with his displays.
However, with the arrival of Ten Hag, the 29-year-old has seen his game time dwindle. The midfielder has started just four times in the Premier League in the current campaign.
While Ten Hag’s praise will be music to his ears, Fred will not want to get comfortable in this role. He would want to regain his starting berth even if it looks difficult right now. Being a squad player at Man United isn’t a bad thing by any means but he would harbour bigger ambitions.
United signed Christian Eriksen and Casemiro in the recent transfer window. The duo have cemented their places in the Dutch manager’s plans in a short span of time in Manchester.
The Denmark international has impressed many with his performances in a red shirt. On the other hand, the former Real Madrid star has become an essential player for us, putting in Man of the Match displays week in, week out.

Bruno Fernandes is the other midfielder who makes up the Old Trafford side’s preferred engine room trio under Ten Hag. Thus, it will evidently be hard for Fred to become a consistent member of the starting lineup. However, the 29-year-old has been making a case for himself in recent matches.
