Xavi does not want Memphis Depay to leave Barcelona amidst Manchester United links
Barcelona manager Xavi does not want Memphis Depay to leave Barcelona in the ongoing transfer window amidst links to Manchester United. The Spanish manager is keen on keeping hold of the Holland international.
The Red Devils are looking to add reinforcements to their forward line. As a result, the 28-year-old is being eyed by the Old Trafford side on a temporary move for the rest of the season.
However, speaking to the media via Manchester Evening News, Xavi has no intention of parting ways with any of his current squad members. The Barcelona head coach has promised to give Depay an opportunity in the team.
“I don’t want anyone to leave. I’m delighted with the squad. It seems there won’t be a market for us. I’m happy with Depay. His attitude is good and he will be important for us. He has the ability to make a difference. He’ll have minutes. Like all of them.”
The 28-year-old signed for the Blaugrana in the summer of 2021 as a free agent after a successful stint with Olympique Lyon. He ended last season as the La Liga outfit’s joint top goalscorer.
However, in the current campaign, the Holland international has found game time hard to come by. The forward’s injury has not helped his cause either.
But Depay showed a glimpse of his talent in Qatar. The 28-year-old was a key player for Louis van Gaal at the 2022 World Cup. He scored in the round of 16 tie against the United States. However, the Netherlands lost to eventual champions Argentina in the quarter-finals.
The Holland international also has a prior history with United. He had signed for the club back in the summer of 2015 from PSV Eindhoven. Unfortunately, it did not work out for the forward in Manchester, who left the Red Devils after one-and-a-half years.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s recent departure from the Old Trafford side has dwindled Erik ten Hag’s attacking options. Anthony Martial is the only natural striker in the squad at the moment.
