Memphis Depay has instigated talks with Manchester United
According to the Athletic (Subscription Required), Barcelona star Memphis Depay has contacted Manchester United over a possible return to the club which can lead to a January move for the Dutch forward.
The Red Devils were apparently interested in signing the out-of-favour Barcelona star in the summer. However, the player himself instigating talks with Man United could lead to a January transfer for the club.
Man United are looking to reinforce their options in attack this month. The untimely departure of Cristiano Ronaldo has left a gaping hole in the attack and Depay could be the chosen one to fill that void.
Memphis Depay (36) moves up to sixth in Netherlands’ all time top goalscorer list, overtaking Ruud van Nistelrooy (35).

First things first, Depay is not a natural replacement for Ronaldo. In fact, he is anything but that. The Dutchman is not a natural striker by any means and cannot be expected to play that role. However, he can play as a central forward.
In the correct system and surrounded by the correct kind of players, Depay can be absolutely lethal. He has a mean finish on him and he can also play the creator role to perfection. He will be a solid fit in Erik ten Hag’s system.
Depay’s contract at Barcelona is set to expire come the summer (Transfermarkt) and there seems to be absolutely no inclination from either party to extend this deal. This means that Man United will be able to sign him for a nominal fee.
Considering the fact that it is being claimed that Man United are looking at cost-effective options to reinforce their forward line, Depay perfectly fits the bill. It remains to be seen if the Red Devils actually manage to secure him.
Depay is 28 years old and has a lot of football left in him. His time at Barcelona has been mixed but to be fair to him, most of it is not his fault. He has performed admirably well whenever given a chance and we see his quality regularly for the national team.

Man United and Erik ten Hag could really do with a player like Depay. Let’s hope they are able to sign him and make him a key part of the team. Hopefully, it is a better second stint at Old Trafford than the one he had before.
