SL Benfica and Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez being watched by Manchester United
Manchester United are ‘watching’ SL Benfica and Argentina star Enzo Fernandez but have not made a move yet for the midfielder, according to journalist Bruno Andrade on Twitter via Sport Witness (h/t Manchester Evening News).
The 21-year-old caught a lot of people’s attention with his performances at the 2022 World Cup. Lionel Scaloni’s team went all the way to lift the golden trophy in Qatar. And the youngster was a pivotal part of La Albiceleste’s success, winning the Young Player of the Tournament award.
Subsequently, now, the Red Devils and a number of top sides are being linked with Fernandez’s signature. However, the Old Trafford side are only monitoring the youngster for the time being.
The midfielder signed for the Eagles in the previous transfer window from River Plate. His current contract runs until the summer of 2027. The Liga Portugal outfit inserted a £106 million release clause in the Argentine’s deal.
Fernandez has also impressed many during his short time with Benfica. The Portuguese outfit are unbeaten in all competitions this season.
Roger Schmidt’s team also finished top of their group in the Champions League. The Eagles pipped Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus to the top spot and will now face Club Brugge in the round of 16.
In the current campaign, the 21-year-old has made 25 appearances in all competitions for Benfica. He has played in multiple positions in the middle of the park for Schmidt and has scored five goals and provided three assists.
United’s engine room was bolstered in the previous transfer window with the addition of Christian Eriksen and Casemiro. While the two have been brilliant for us, our bench seemingly lacks quality in depth.

The likes of Fred, Scott McTominay and Donny van de Beek have failed to live up to expectations in Manchester. Thus, it would be wise for the Red Devils to bring someone like Fernandez to the Old Trafford side.
