Transfer News: Phil Thompson urges Jude Bellingham to choose Liverpool over Manchester United
Former Liverpool centre-back Phil Thompson has urged Borussia Dortmund midfielder, Jude Bellingham to choose his old club over rivals Manchester United.
He cited the example of Reds defender Virgil van Dijk and believes that a move to Merseyside will benefit his career more. Van Dijk had interest from us and Manchester City, but the Dutchman was determined to go to Anfield.
Speaking to Express Sport, the former defender gave his reasons why the England international should follow suit like the Dutchman.
“You look at when we signed Virgil van Dijk, Virgil could have gone to City, he could have gone to Arsenal, he could have gone to Manchester United, but he chose Liverpool above them because it was the right club for him.”
Erik ten Hag needs to reinforce his midfield going forward. While the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Christian Eriksen and Casemiro have delivered for us this season, others have failed to do the same.
Donny van de Beek, Scott McTominay and Fred have failed to provide the necessary competition and have also not been able to perform up to the standard when given a chance. Van de Beek has also struggled for game time since joining us from Ajax.
Bellingham, on the other hand, has gone from strength to strength every season and has established himself as one of the best midfielders in the world. The 19-year-old has been crucial for both club and country and has seen his stock rise exponentially.
Most of the top teams are interested in his signature and his addition will be an instant upgrade to any midfield. United could do with a player like him as they look to dominate Premier League football again.
It remains to be seen where the midfielder ends up in the near future. It would be foolish to say that Man United are not the right club for him. We have housed some of England’s finest ever midfielders.
