Transfer News: Manchester United are confident that they will sign Cody Gakpo next month
According to Team Talk (h/t Manchester Evening News), Manchester United are ‘confident’ that they will be able to sign PSV Eindhoven and the Netherlands international Cody Gakpo.
United have been linked with a move for the 23-year-old for some time now and was even wanted by them during the summer. However, after much speculation and rumours nothing came of it.
However, the Red Devils have kept tabs on the player since then and now reports indicate that the Manchester-based club are ‘highly confident’ of securing the forward’s signature next month.
Gakpo has been in exceptional form this season for the Dutch club. The 23-year-old has featured in 23 games in all competitions for them so far, scoring 13 goals and registering another 17 assists in the process.
Erik ten Hag needs to add another forward to his attacking line-up. Cristiano Ronaldo saw his contract get terminated last month, leaving only Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford as the only forwards that can be deployed as strikers.
The 23-year-old has been in fine form and also continued his form when he scored three goals in five games for his country at the World Cup, helping them reach the quarter-finals of the tournament before they crashed out after losing 6-5 on penalties to eventual winners Argentina.
However, he won’t come cheap, and understandably so. It is believed that the Red Devils will have to pay around £45 million for the services of the Dutchman. There is also interest from Liverpool and Real Madrid among others in the forward.
While the news is encouraging for United fans, it will be wise not to be much excited before the club can confirm the singing. Should the deal go through, he could be a fantastic addition to the squad.

Ronaldo’s exit would leave a void that needs to be filled and one could argue that we needed to sign a centre-forward for the present and the future even when the former Real Madrid star was at Old Trafford. Let’s just hope January turns out to be the month where this long-drawn saga ends.
