PSV Eindhoven want a record transfer for Cody Gakpo amidst Manchester United interest
Marcel Brands, the sporting director at PSV Eindhoven, has demanded a record transfer for Cody Gakpo amidst interest from Manchester United. He believes only a handful of clubs will be able to afford the 23-year-old.
Erik ten hag has admitted that the Red Devils are looking for a replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo. The 37-year-old recently departed the club. And the Netherlands international is someone who has been linked with the Old Trafford side.
Gakpo was in talks with United in the recent transfer window. However, a deal fell through. Speaking to the Eredivisie outfit’s supporters on Eeuwig Trouw (h/t Manchester Evening News), Brands has revealed Gakpo could leave in January for the right price.
“When you talk about Cody Gakpo and the price tag, how many clubs are able to buy a player of that calibre? You are talking about maybe 10 or 12 clubs in Europe.
“Amounts have not been discussed, but if the right club comes that Cody would like to go… Those agreements were already made before I came. It must be a record transfer for PSV anyway. Then you know in which direction it should go.”
The 23-year-old has been in fine form for PSV since last season. However, in the current campaign, the forward’s displays have caught a lot of people’s attention.
This season, the Holland international has made 24 appearances for the Red and Whites in all competitions. He has scored 13 goals and provided 17 assists up until now.
Gakpo also shined for the Netherlands at the 2022 World Cup. The 23-year-old scored in all three group-stage fixtures for the Oranje. However, Louis van Gaal’s team were knocked out by Argentina in the quarter-finals.
Ronaldo’s departure has left United with one less goalscorer in the squad. While Marcus Rashford has been decent as our number nine, the 25-year-old leaves a lot to be desired with his finishing.
As for Anthony Martial, while the France international has been brilliant when he has featured, appearances have been few and far between for the 27-year-old this season due to injuries.

We have other options like Jadon Sancho, Antony, Alejandro Garnacho and Anthony Elanga in the attack, but none of them have been prolific for the Red Devils. But Gakpo has shown a keen eye for goals in the current campaign. Thus, it would be wise for the club to opt for the 23-year-old’s signature.
