Switzerland and Borussia Monchengladbach star Yann Sommer set for Premier League move with Manchester United interested
Borussia Monchengladbach and Switzerland star Yann Sommer is set to move to the Premier League next summer with Manchester United interested in his services, according to German outlet BILD via mufcMPB on Twitter (h/t Manchester Evening News).
The Red Devils are eyeing the 33-year-old and want to make the shot-stopper their new number one. His current contract with Die Fohlen expires in the summer of 2023.
Sommer has been at the Bundesliga outfit for several years now. He joined the Borussia-Park side in 2014 from FC Basel. Since then, the goalkeeper has been the first name on the team sheet at Gladbach.
The 33-year-old has once again been the go-to man for Daniel Farke at the Bundesliga outfit. In the current campaign, the Swiss national has made 11 appearances for Die Fohlen in all competitions, keeping four clean sheets.
Sommer has also featured for Switzerland at the World Cup. The shot-stopper started in the first two group-stage fixtures for the Rossocrociati against Cameroon and Brazil. Murat Yakin’s team will face Portugal in the round of 16.
Currently, David de Gea is the first choice in between the sticks for Erik ten Hag. The Spaniard has been in impressive form since last season for the Red Devils.
The 32-year-old had a shaky start to the current campaign. However, the shot-stopper has managed to find his feet. But the former Atletico Madrid star leaves a lot to be desired with the ball at his feet, something the Dutch manager seemingly values.
With Dean Henderson joining Nottingham Forest on loan in the recent transfer window, the Old Trafford side signed Martin Dubravka on a temporary deal. However, the Slovakia international has not been given many opportunities. Tom Heaton is the third option in the squad.

Sommer’s age does not make him a compelling buy for United. However, maybe the fanbase would not mind if the club signed the 33-year-old as a backup for next season.
