Portugal and Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo says “I talk when I want to” in defence of Piers Morgan interview

Manchester United and Portugal superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has defended the timing of his interview with Piers Morgan. The 37-year-old stated that he talked when he felt like it.

The forward made some controversial comments that a lot of fans of the Old Trafford side did not like. He took aim at the club and certain people in the hierarchy while claiming not to respect Erik ten Hag.

Speaking to the media via Metro, Ronaldo expressed no regret for the statements he made. The Portugal international also backed releasing snippets of the interview just hours after the Manchester-based club’s final fixture before the World Cup break against Fulham.

“Timing is always timing. From you side it is easy to look at how we can choose timings.

“Sometimes you write truths, sometimes you write lies. I don’t have to worry about what others think. I talk when I want to. Everybody knows who I am and what I believe in.”

United played at the Craven Cottage on 13 November. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner was not with the travelling squad. And we won 2-1 with a stoppage-time winner from Alejandro Garnacho.

However, the 37-year-old’s statements shifted focus from the Red Devils’ win. His comments took away some of the positive feelings the fanbase had after the fixture.

The Old Trafford side are now looking at ways to proceed in light of the forward’s interview with Morgan. And the club are thinking about rescinding his contract at the Manchester-based club.

Ronaldo returned to United in the summer of 2021 from Juventus. He had left the Red Devils in 2009 and joined Real Madrid. The 37-year-old’s homecoming to Manchester was met with a lot of fanfare.

Unfortunately, with the arrival of Ten Hag in the Old Trafford side’s dugout, the fairytale return has turned into a seeming nightmare. The Portuguese icon has struggled to find a place for himself in the Dutch manager’s plans. The 37-year-old’s form in front of goal has not helped his cause either.

Thus, at this point, the best thing for both the club and the player would be to part ways. But it remains to be seen how the situation unfolds in the coming months. It is, however, safe to say that Ronaldo has alienated the majority of the club’s fanbase.
