Manchester United send official bid for Barcelona striker Memphis Depay
According to journalist Adrian Sanchez (h/t Manchester Evening News), Manchester United have sent their first official bid to Barcelona as they look to sign out-of-favour Dutch striker Memphis Depay in the January transfer window.
Depay has lost prominence in Barcelona this season with the arrival of Robert Lewandowski, which saw his game diminish at the start of the season. He got injured during the international break and has missed club football ever since.
The 28-year-old has made just three appearances for Xavi’s side this season scoring one goal in this period. He was the club’s top scorer last season across all competitions but there are question marks over his future at the club.
The former Olympique Lyon forward has been a part of Man United in the past when he joined them from PSV Eindhoven but it was a spell that he would like to forget with the 28-year-old having a torrid time in Manchester.
It was in Lyon that Depay well and truly realised his potential and became one of the best goal-scoring forwards in Europe. However, he decided to join Barcelona on a free transfer last summer and has been there ever since.
Now it looks like Man United want to re-sign their former player and there is no doubt that if he indeed dons the Red Devils shirt again, it will be better than how it went last time and he would suit the style that Erik ten Hag plays.
Depay has a contract will Barcelona until 2023 (Transfermarkt) and he could be available on a bargain deal in the summer, considering the fact that his contract expires in a few months and this augurs well for the Red Devils.
Man United have Cristiano Ronaldo as a striker but he has struggled for form this season. Anthony Martial although impressive has really struggled to stay fit for much of the season and is not reliable due to this.
