Erik ten Hag ‘obsessed’ with bringing Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni to Manchester United in 2023
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is ‘obsessed’ about bringing Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni to the club next year, according to Fichajes (Manchester Evening News).
The former Ajax head coach wants the Red Devils to pursue the signature of the Italy international. And if the Serie A giants consider offers for him, the gaffer wants the Old Trafford side to be in the mix.
However, United will have to sell some of their centre-backs before making a move for Bastoni. Phil Jones and Axel Tuanzebe are still on the club’s books. Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof are also in the squad.
Our captain and the Sweden international have not started many games under Ten Hag. The Dutch manager has preferred the partnership of Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane. And the French and Argentine duo have been solid for the most part.
Maguire initially started alongside Martinez. However, after United lost the opening two games of the season to Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford, the England international was relegated to the bench.
On the other hand, Lindelof missed the start of the campaign due to an injury. However, even after his return, the 28-year-old has rarely got any opportunities to get on the pitch.
Ten Hag has evidently decided on his two centre-backs. And it seems unlikely that other options will be able to oust either Martinez or Varane from their regular berths.
Bastoni is a quality defender in his own right. The Italian has played the majority of minutes for the Nerazzurri in the current campaign.

The defender is still young and has a long way to go in his career and it will be interesting to see if the 23-year-old will opt to switch from Milan to Manchester – especially if we struggle to secure a UEFA Champions League spot again.
