Erik ten Hag sent ‘desperate text’ to bring Ajax youngster Brian Brobbey to Manchester United in the summer
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag sent Ajax youngster Brian Brobbey a ‘desperate text’ to bring him to the club, according to Algemeen Dagblad (h/t Manchester Evening News).
In the recent transfer window, the Dutch manager, who was in the Amsterdam-based club’s dugout for five seasons, wanted to sign the 20-year-old. However, it ended up being a ‘text in vain’ as the centre-forward stayed with the Eredivisie outfit.
Brobbey came up through the youth ranks at Ajax. The 20-year-old was given his debut by Ten Hag on 31 October, 2020 against Fortuna Sittard in Holland’s top flight. And the young forward played around 25 minutes and scored a goal in the 5-2 victory.
And then, Brobbey was given regular opportunities with the first team. However, in the summer of 2021, RB Leipzig came knocking and the 20-year-old left his boyhood club.
But unfortunately, Brobbey did not have the best of times with the German outfit. The Holland youngster was not given a lot of game time. Subsequently, he went back to Amsterdam in January 2022.
Brobbey rejoined Ajax in the recent transfer window. The 20-year-old has featured in every game under Alfred Schreuder. In 14 appearances in all competitions, the forward has scored four goals and provided three assists.
Ten Hag wanted to bolster the forward line in the summer of 2022 and approached Brobbey. However, in the end, the Dutch manager got Antony from his former club.
The Brazilian has started his career in Manchester on the front foot. In the 22-year-old’s debut in a red shirt, he scored against Arsenal as the Old Trafford side beat the Gunners 3-1. Since then, Antony has gone on to score in each of his first three league games for the Red Devils.
