Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe sees similarities between Bruno Guimaraes and Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes
Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes has been hailed as a “fantastic” player by Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe. The Magpies’ head coach sees a lot of similarities between the Portuguese and Bruno Guimaraes.
Fernandes and Newcastle’s Brazilian star have both been in fine form this season. The Portugal international has been a pivotal player for the Red Devils since his arrival from Sporting CP in January 2020.
Guimaraes has also been influential for the Toons since signing from Olympique Lyon in January 2022. And Speaking to the media via Manchester Evening News, when suggested whether the 24-year-old was better than Fernandes, Howe claimed to enjoy them both.
“I think Bruno Fernandes is a fantastic player.
“They’ve got a lot of similarities to their games, both technically very good. Maybe Fernandes plays a little bit higher up the pitch but our Bruno can do exactly the same, he’s got the versatility of playing deeper. Two great technicians and I enjoy both of them play.”
The Portugal international has been one of the best midfielders in the Premier League since making his way to England. The 28-year-old has an eye for goal and also creates chances for his fellow teammates.
While Guimaraes has been decent for Newcastle, the 24-year-old plays deeper than Fernandes. The Brazilian is more of a box-to-box type player, while the Portugal international predominantly plays in the number 10 role.
Fernandes has started every game in the PL under Erik ten Hag. The 28-year-old has also been donning the captain’s armband in the absence of Harry Maguire from the first team.
After an abysmal start to the campaign, Man United have found their feet somewhat. Apart from the 6-3 defeat against Manchester City, the Old Trafford side have won every league game since the loss to Brentford.
In the previous fixture, Man United snatched victory in the dying minutes against Omonia Nicosia in the Europa League. Scott McTominay scored the winner in the 93rd minute as the Red Devils won 1-0.
