PSV Eindhoven could be forced to sell Manchester United summer 2022 target Cody Gakpo for economic relief
Cody Gakpo, who Manchester United were linked with in the summer of 2022, could leave PSV Eindhoven due to economic reasons. The Eredivisie outfit need to sell someone in order to balance their books, according to Voetbal International via Sport Witness (h/t Manchester Evening News).
PSV midfielder Ibrahim Sangare or the 23-year-old forward could be on the chopping block amidst the Dutch side’s money troubles. Selling either would alleviate the Red and Whites’ financial issues.
Thus, United have been put on alert with a chance to pursue Gakpo once more. The arrival of Antony from Ajax in the recent transfer window seemingly affected a move for the PSV star.
Gakpo has started the 2022/23 campaign on fire. Under manager Ruud van Nistelrooy, who played for the Red Devils, the Holland international has made 14 appearances and scored 10 goals while providing nine assists in all competitions.
During the recent international break, Gakpo was called up by former United head coach Louis van Gaal to the national side. And in the Nations League against Poland and Belgium, the 23-year-old was impressive for the Netherlands.
At the Old Trafford side, Erik ten Hag was afforded just one forward signing in the form of his former player in Amsterdam. Antony’s career in a red shirt went off to a blistering start. He scored on his debut against Arsenal in a 3-1 victory.
The Dutch manager has also been able to rejuvenate the other options he inherited in the attack. Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Anthony Martial have all evidently upped their game since last season.
