Gary Neville believes Manchester United ‘bottled’ the derby

Gary Neville believes that his former side Manchester United ‘bottled’ the derby against Manchester City. The former defender made his remarks during his match commentary for Sky Sports.

“The story of the game is that in the first half Manchester United froze. There’s no doubt they bottled it. They have been really nervous.”

“They have just not handled this derby at all. I expected so much more from United. There was no composure. They never settled. They were anxious and nervous on the ball.”

United suffered a humiliating 6-3 defeat at the hands of Pep Guardiola’s side at the Etihad. Both Erling Haaland and Phil Foden scored hat-tricks to continue their unbeaten start to the league this season.

The Red Devils were 4-0 down in the first half and never looked like recovering in the second half. Antony was on the scoresheet for the second consecutive league game since joining the club on the deadline day this summer.

Anthony Martial came off the bench to score a brace and add some respect to the score line. The Reds were in action after almost a month and they seemed like they did not know how to play football.

The players struggled to complete passes throughout the game. While the Cityzens never looked in trouble, the visitors seemed anxious from the first minute itself.

Whoever watched the game knew that it was going to be a long day for the Reds. After having won four league games on the trot, this type of performance is neither expected nor accepted by anyone, especially for a club like United.

Fans will not be happy at all with such a performance and will expect a good reply in their next game. The Red Devils will now prepare for their Europa League clash against Omonia this Thursday and a convincing win is expected.
