Memphis Depay decided to stay at Barcelona in the recent transfer window amidst interest from Manchester United. The Holland international wanted to make himself a part of Xavi Hernandez’s plans.

Depay made his way to Barcelona last summer after winding down his contract with Olympique Lyon. The 28-year-old had an impressive four-and-a-half-year spell with the Ligue 1 outfit. However, in Spain, the Dutch national has been a bit-part player.

Speaking to ESPN (h/t The Sun), Depay revealed he had a chance to leave the Catalan giants in the summer. However, after evaluating his options, the 28-year-old was determined to fight for his place at Spotify Camp Nou.

“Other clubs came and then you just look at your options. I decided to fight for my chance here.”

United were not the only ones looking at bringing Depay to England. Tottenham Hotspur also had an eye on the Holland international. The Blaugrana also offered the 28-year-old’s services to Chelsea.

With the arrival of Robert Lewandowski at Barcelona in the recent transfer window, Depay has seemingly gone down the pecking order. The 28-year-old has been on the bench in most games this season.

Depay previously had a spell at United. The Dutch national was signed from PSV Eindhoven. However, after just one and a half years in Manchester, the 28-year-old left for France.

The Red Devils strengthened the squad in all areas of the pitch in Erik ten Hag’s first transfer window. Reinforcements were brought to bolster the defence, midfield, attack and goalkeeping departments.

Antony was the lone signing in the forward line. The Brazilian arrived from Ajax and reunited with his former manager in Manchester. The 22-year-old opened the scoring against Arsenal in the Premier League on his debut as we won 3-1.

However, United evidently need to add more depth up front. A few injuries to some of our attacking stars deplete Ten Hag’s options. With the long season ahead, it would have been wise to invest in a player like Depay this summer.
