Bruno Fernandes opens up on his dream move to Manchester United from Sporting CP in January 2020
Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes has opened up about how he got his dream move to the Red Devils from Sporting CP in January 2020. The Portuguese has claimed that former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was a big part of it.
Fernandes moved to Manchester from Lisbon after having a few impressive seasons in Portugal. For Sporting CP, the 28-year-old played 137 times, scoring 63 goals and providing 50 assists.
Speaking to The Athletic (Subscription Required) [h/t Express], Fernandes details how the move came about. The 28-year-old’s agent promised him his “dream club”. Eventually, the Portuguese moved to United. And he credits Ole to a certain extent for it.
“At the beginning of January, my agent said you don’t need to worry because any time I bring you a club, it will be a dream club for you.”
“He knew that the dream club was Man United. Ole was a big part of that because he actually went to see my games.”
Fernandes took to the Premier League like a duck to water. The Portuguese made an immediate impact. Having arrived in the January window of the 2019/20 season, the 28-year-old registered 12 goals and eight assists in 22 matches in all competitions.
The former Sporting CP star’s first full campaign in a red shirt saw him have a stellar season. Fernandes was the talisman in the United squad. The Portuguese featured 58 times in all competitions, scoring 28 goals and providing 17 assists.
However, Fernandes has gone off the boil in recent times. Considering the standards he set for himself in Manchester, fans felt the Portuguese was not at his best in the previous campaign.
United looked lacklustre in the 2021/22 season up front. We were devoid of creativity. Fernandes looked frustrated in most of his appearances. And apart from Cristiano Ronaldo, none of the attacking talent in the squad lived up to expectations.
