Barcelona join race to sign winger that has been on Manchester United’s transfer radar

Casemiro and Marco Asensio of Real Madrid celebrate victory together after Marouane Fellaini of Manchester United is dejected after the UEFA Super Cup final in 2017.

Barcelona have joined the race for Real Madrid forward Marco Asensio, linked with Manchester United

Real Madrid forward Marco Asensio, who was linked with Manchester United this summer, is attracting interest from Barcelona. The Blaugrana have joined the race for the 26-year-old’s signature, according to Mundo Deportivo (h/t Express).

Asensio is in the last year of his contract with Los Blancos. The Spaniard could join any club on a free transfer at the end of the season. As per Caught Offside (h/t Manchester Evening News), United are interested in making a move for the winger in the future.

Arsenal, Newcastle and AC Milan are also in the race for Asensio’s signature. And Madrid could be tempted to part ways with the forward in January itself. The 13-time Champions League winners are wary of Barcelona.

United were one of the sides associated with the Spaniard in the recent transfer window. The Red Devils were seemingly in need of reinforcements.

The Manchester-based club ended up signing just a single attacking player to add to Erik ten Hag’s squad. The Dutch manager was reunited with Antony, who arrived for big money from Ajax.

Most of United’s players struggled in front of goal in the previous campaign. Apart from Cristiano Ronaldo, none of the other attacking options were able to make their mark in the team.

Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho were two players fans had high hopes from last season. However, the English duo were bitterly disappointing. The forwards failed to make a considerable impact when they featured.

While Asensio is not a prolific goalscorer, the Spaniard is decent on the ball and in the final third. The Madrid forward was once one of the brightest prospects in football. However, the 26-year-old has gone off the boil a bit in the last few years after suffering from injuries.

Nonetheless, Asensio possesses the ability to play for any top side. Fans would think the Spaniard does not have the qualities to be a starter at United. However, bringing someone like him off the bench is not a bad option to have.
