Manchester United are set to challenge Liverpool in their pursuit of Flamengo midfielder Joao Gomes, according to journalist Julio Miguel Neto on Twitter via The Sun (h/t Manchester Evening News).

The Merseysiders are eyeing a move for the 21-year-old in the January transfer window. However, the Red Devils are also in the mix to bring the Brazilian to the Premier League.

Gomes has been playing for the Mengao since 2020. Over the years in South America, the 21-year-old has gained vast experience as a regular for Flamengo.

The Brazilian wonderkid is a versatile midfielder who mainly operates as a defensive midfielder. However, Gomes has played in other positions as well, such as the number eight and number 10 role.

United’s bolstered midfield

United lost a host of players in the middle of the park this summer. And to replenish the squad, Erik ten Hag was afforded the signings of Christian Eriksen and Casemiro. The latter was signed from Real Madrid in what was an unexpected move for fans.

Eriksen, meanwhile, has been a brilliant addition to the team. The 30-year-old has made an immediate impact in Manchester and appears to have the gaffer’s trust.

Casemiro has added strength to the middle of the park as well. The Brazilian is a robust midfielder. He brings guile to the engine room. Fans who have seen the 30-year-old know that he has the ability to solidify the defence with his contribution in midfield.

Ten Hag also has other options to choose from. Fred and Scott McTominay have in the past been the regulars in the double pivot. In the 2022/23 campaign, though, in the initial days of the new manager, only the Scotland international has continued to be picked in the starting XI.
