Lisandro Martinez delighted as Manchester United win against Sheriff
Manchester United centre-back Lisandro Martinez was delighted with the Red Devils beating Sheriff Tiraspol 2-0 as Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo got on the scoresheet. The win got the Old Trafford side their first points of the 2022/23 UEL campaign.
United welcomed Real Sociedad to Manchester in the first game of the group stage. La Real got the better of us in the match. The Spanish outfit were awarded a contentious penalty and beat the Red Devils 1-0.
Speaking to MUTV (h/t Manchester Evening News) after the win in Moldova, Martinez is relieved at United getting the three points. The Argentine had good things to say about the goalscorers.
“We got the three points, so it was very important for us. We work very hard every day in training, so today Sancho scored a fantastic goal, but how we played was fantastic. Sancho’s finish was great and in the end, we all celebrate.
“We know how big Cristiano Ronaldo is, he is very important for us and that he scored tonight, for his confidence and for the team.”
United’s first points in the UEL
The former Borussia Dortmund star opened the scoring for United in the 17th minute. Sancho put the goal in the back of the net from the edge of the box after receiving a pass from Christian Eriksen.
Diogo Dalot was then fouled in the 18-yard box. And none other than our Portuguese number seven stepped up to take the penalty. Ronaldo scored from the spot in the 39th minute.
The Sheriff game was United’s final game before the international break. The team has had a good period of rest, with the game last weekend not being played.
Our most recent game before our visit to Moldova also came in the UEL. Against La Real, Erik ten Hag decided to rotate the squad. We had been on a four-game win streak in the Premier League with a consistent lineup. However, the changes evidently affected us against Sociedad.
However, the gaffer seemingly picked his best side to face Sheriff. Martinez started alongside Raphael Varane. The pairing looks to be Ten Hag’s preferred choice.

Sancho was back in the starting lineup and put in another impressive display. Ronaldo scored his first goal of the 2022/23 campaign for United as well.
Fans have seen encouraging signs since the disappointing start to the season. Hopefully, the Red Devils will be able to continue their fine form before some of our players jet off to Qatar for the World Cup.
