Gareth Southgate sends Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford message following England snub
Manchester United star Marcus Rashford has been sent a reassuring message by Gareth Southgate after the 24-year-old missed out on the latest England squad. The forward has been sidelined due to injury.
Jadon Sancho was another player that the English manager decided against picking. The 22-year-old has been performing well this season for United.
Speaking on his decision to omit some players via Manchester Evening News, Southgate provided hope to the stars who have missed out this time around. The England head coach also specifically mentioned Rashford being in contention for the World Cup squad.
“There were certain players we wanted to keep involved this time, but that said it doesn’t mean that this is the end for some of the others who aren’t involved.
“Marcus Rashford, for example, has shown some encouraging signs recently. He is a player we know well so if he can perform at a high level in the next few weeks, he of course will be under consideration.”
Rashford had a disappointing few months after the Euro 2020 final. The forward seemed to have lost confidence after missing his penalty in the shootout against Italy.
England had the chance to bring back silverware for the first time since the 1966 World Cup. However, the Three Lions fell short as the Gli Azzurri took the Euro 2020 trophy to Italy from Wembley.
Rashford has an underwhelming 2021/22 season. The 24-year-old was hardly able to make an impact when he featured. He made 32 appearances for the Red Devils in all competitions, scoring five goals and providing two assists.
However, under Erik ten Hag, Rashford has found renewed strength. The England international has performed well since the start of pre-season. And the 4-0 loss to Brentford has seemingly fired up United and the 24-year-old.
In six appearances this season in the Premier League, Rashford has scored three goals and provided two assists. He has found the back of the net against tough opposition such as Liverpool and Arsenal.

If the 24-year-old continues to put in decent displays, Southgate will have something to think about when choosing whom he takes to Qatar. There are still a lot of games to be played before the World Cup squad is announced. Hopefully, Sancho and Rashford are able to make their case in the coming weeks.
