Manchester United signing Antony opens up on impressive debut.

Manchester United have made a breakthrough with Ajax for winger Antony

According to Samuel Luckhurst and Rich Fay (h//t Manchester Evening News), Manchester United have made progress in their continued pursuit of Ajax Amsterdam attacker Antony and might finally land their man.

This comes after a bid of €90m was rejected by Ajax. The player came out in an exclusive interview with respectable journalist Fabrizio Romano (h/t the Mirror) and expressed his desire to leave Ajax for Manchester United.

“In June of this year, I interrupted my vacation and came personally to inform the managers of Ajax, including new coach, about my wish to leave and that they should consider this possibility.

I made it clear once again (after the last bid was rejected): I want to leave.”

Antony has been vocal about his desire to move to Old Trafford and his interview seems to have done the trick with Ajax willing to negotiate a deal with United for the player.

It seems like there has been a change of stance from Ajax manager Alfred Schreuder who was earlier insistent on keeping Antony but had this to say to ESPN (h/t The Mirror) before Ajax’s game against Utrecht.

“The Antony situation hasn’t changed compared to last week.

But I want to focus on the players we have here, for now Antony is not important”

According to The Athletic, Manchester United have made a breakthrough and are close to completing a deal with Ajax that will make the Brazilian’s transfer the highest transfer fee for a player in the Eredivisie.

It is speculated that United will increase their offer from their last bid and negotiate a deal that can potentially reach €100m with performance-related add-ons.

The game against Southampton showed the need for a proper right winger in the squad with a one-dimensional approach coming from Anthony Elanga, who to his defence is better suited coming off the left.

Many claims that it is a big price for someone who has had two good seasons in the Dutch League, however, our last two wins have shown the impact of the new signings and therefore it is imperative that we support our manager with his preferred signings

A hefty price tag can sometimes play a taxing role on a player’s mind and this is where we have to make sure that if the transfer is concluded, Antony is given the time he needs to adapt to the new environment.

A summer transfer window which was looking very bleak two weeks back is now suddenly looking pretty decent, with two major cogs of a holding midfielder and a right winger being resolved.
