Cristiano Ronaldo thanks the Old Trafford crowd after victory over Liverpool
Manchester United superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has taken to the social media platform Facebook and thanked the fans for their support after the Red Devils beat Liverpool 2-1 at Old Trafford.
United face the Merseysiders in the final game of matchday three in the Premier League. Both teams came into the game after disappointing performances in the previous two fixtures. Liverpool had two points on the board while Erik ten Hag’s side sat in 19th place in the table with zero points.
Ronaldo’s campaign has started off on an uncertain note. The Portugal international missed the majority of the pre-season under the new gaffer. The 37-year-old featured in just one friendly against Rayo Vallecano, where he seemed to be off the pace.
United’s top goalscorer from last season sat on the bench against Brighton & Hove Albion as Ten Hag took charge of his first competitive game in the Old Trafford dugout. Christian Eriksen was chosen to start as the centre-forward with Anthony Martial sidelined.
The 37-year-old came on in the second half against the Seagulls but failed to make an impact as we lost 2-1. The Portuguese started the second game as the Red Devils visited the Gtech Community Stadium. However, the Bees scored four goals past us in the opening 35 minutes as we lost the game 4-0.
Ronaldo was dropped against Liverpool
Having gotten off to our worst start in the league for 101 years, Ten Hag decided to change things up a bit against Liverpool. Star players like Ronaldo, Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw were dropped from the XI.
United were much more intense from the start of the game against the Merseysiders. We pressed Liverpool high and made things difficult for the opposition.
Marcus Rashford started in the centre-forward position. Anthony Elanga and Jadon Sancho were on the wings. The former Borussia Dortmund star opened the scoring, with his England compatriot netting another in the second half.

Ronaldo came on in the 86th minute, replacing Rashford. At the time, the team were trying to hold onto the lead as Mohamed Salah put one past David de Gea minutes earlier. United ended up winning 2-1, leapfrogging Liverpool in the table.
Going forward, it’ll be interesting to see whether Ten Hag opts to bench the Portuguese legend during the big games.
