Liverpool star Fabinho ‘doesn’t understand’ the criticism directed towards Manchester United midfielder Fred
Fabinho has hit out at the critics of Manchester United midfielder Fred. The Liverpool star feels the 29-year-old is often the scapegoat when the Red Devils don’t play well.
Fred’s performances have come under the microscope in recent weeks. United as a whole have been disappointing. However, fans have pointed their fingers at the lack of quality in the middle of the park for some of our woes.
Speaking to The Telegraph (h/t Metro), the Brazilian star’s compatriot in the national side, Fabinho, came to the United midfielder’s defence. The 28-year-old is confounded by the flak Fred takes.
“Sometimes I don’t really understand the criticisms with Fred because he is a regular player, he always plays good football.
“In general Manchester United have not been successful in the last seasons so you try to find a solution or you try to put the fault on some of the players and sometimes I think Fred is that player.”
Fabinho, who’s often played with the United midfielder for the Selecao, is impressed by Fred’s performances whenever he features for Tite’s side.
In the previous campaign, under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the team had a few issues in the engine room. Scott McTominay often accompanied the South American in the midfield and while the team didn’t improve much under Ralf Rangnick, Fred put in some impressive displays.
Fabinho pointed out his compatriot’s showings from last season, where the United midfielder shined. The Liverpool star feels Fred was one of the Red Devils’ better performers in the 2021/22 campaign.
“Last season he played really good football, maybe he was one of the best United players.
“This season United didn’t start really good but I hope Fred will play good and United will stay playing like this.”
Under Rangnick, the Brazilian had a few standout moments. Fred was deployed a bit further up the pitch by the German manager. And the 29-year-old shined in that role.
However, the new season has gone off to an awful start for Erik ten Hag and his team. We’ve lost against Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford in the first two fixtures. Fred has had a few different roles but hasn’t been convincing in the middle of the park.
