James Garner surprised at Manchester United decision to sell him this transfer window

Manchester United academy graduate James Garner has been left surprised at the club’s decision to sell him permanently this transfer window. The Old Trafford side are willing to listen to offers in the region of £14 million for the England U21 international.

The 21-year-old is considered surplus to requirements at United. The Red Devils are close to securing the signature of Casemiro from Real Madrid.

Speaking to GiveMeSport (h/t Express), talkSPORT presenter Alex Crook has revealed Garner’s disbelief at his boyhood club wanting to part ways with the 21-year-old. However, the decision has been attributed to United’s need for money.

“He’s been a bit surprised that United are willing to let him go at all, let alone on a permanent transfer. But I guess it shows they need to raise funds for this rebuild.”

Garner has come back to Manchester after an impressive loan spell at Nottingham Forest. The 21-year-old joined the Tricky Trees in the winter window of the 2020/21 season. He spent a fruitful one-and-a-half-season with the West Bridgford outfit.

The United academy graduate became a prominent member of the Forest side as soon as he landed at City Ground. Garner helped the club get promoted to the Premier League after a 23-year absence.

The 21-year-old’s impressive spell with the Tricky Trees has made Garner a sought-after prospect. PL clubs Leeds United, Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur are said to be interested in acquiring his services.

However, considering his progression through United’s youth teams and spell with Forest, fans of the Manchester-based club wanted the 21-year-old to be introduced into the Red Devils’ squad.

Garner didn’t have much influence during the pre-season games as he wasn’t given many minutes. The start of the season has seen Fred and Scott McTominay feature for United.

Supporters would rather have Garner be given the minutes instead of midfielders who’ve failed to make an impact over the years. However, it seems the club has other plans. Hopefully, the academy finds success in the next stage of his career.
