Manchester United reach agreement with Sevilla over season-long loan move for Alex Telles

Manchester United have reached an agreement with Sevilla over a season-long loan move for Alex Telles, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano on Twitter.

The Brazilian will join the Andalusians until the end of next season. It’s a straight loan and the Spanish club don’t have the option to buy him at the end of the stint. The clubs are preparing the paperwork to finalise the deal.

Telles joined the Red Devils back in 2020 from FC Porto. United have used him sparingly since then as a backup to Luke Shaw. But the England international’s injuries have meant the 29-year-old has seen considerable game time nonetheless.

Shaw has remained the first choice for managers at the Manchester-based club for some years now. The 27-year-old is one of the best in the world when on form.

United have also signed another left-back this summer. Tyrell Malacia arrived from Feyenoord as our first major signing of the transfer window.

The Dutch national was a prominent member of the Rotterdam-based club’s first team. Having come up through the youth ranks at Feyenoord, the 22-year-old featured in 136 games for the Eredivisie side throughout his career.

Another player capable of playing in the left-back role is Lisandro Martinez. At Ajax under Erik ten Hag, the Argentine was deployed in the left-hand side of a back four on various occasions.

Keeping this in mind, it would be difficult for Telles to have a guaranteed spot in United’s XI next season. Most players have the Qatar World Cup, which is coming at the end of the year, in the back of their minds.

Overall, the move is wise for both parties. Fans will feel there was no need to have another space in the squad for a left-back. Hopefully, Telles comes back stronger at the end of his loan spell.
