Manchester United still keeping hopes in their pursuit of signing Frenkie de Jong

According to Metro, Manchester United have not given up on their pursuit of Barcelona maestro, Frenkie de Jong as they are willing to play the waiting game to get their hands on him. It has been no secret that the 25-year-old has been linked with a move to Old Trafford.

However, the transfer looks more complicated with every passing day as both the clubs are yet to find a common ground on the deal. The Red Devils have already placed their final bid for the former Ajax player which was accepted by the Blaugrana after rejecting their offers several times.

An £85million deal is already waiting on the table but there are no hands to accept it. Neither De Jong nor his agent has expressed any bit of interest in moving to Old Trafford and the midfielder has himself revealed that he would be happy to stay at his ‘dream club’.

The Spanish giants are known for their notorious habit of reducing players’ wages just to balance their financial books. The club has been hit hard since the pandemic times and they’re slowly crawling back to safety through a big money deal with Spotify.

Even if they have some inflow of money, they would still need to make smart use of it by paying their player’s wages. However, this hasn’t been the case with the Netherlands international. The 25-year-old is yet to receive his deferred wages and he would be unwilling to go public as that would affect his stature at Barcelona.

Manchester United would be growing frustrated with the long transfer saga surrounding the player. It has been known that the Red Devils have targeted De Jong’s alternative in Sergej Milinkovic Savic and Youri Tielemans, but, no official bids have been made until now.

However, even after such turmoil, the Barcelona board have signed top-class players such as Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha, Andres Christensen, Jules Kounde and Frank Kessie. Xavi may be looking forward to more signings but the club needs to sell their players in order to register new players.

Man United would be familiar with the fact that the Spanish giants would either need to sell their star asset or move away from this deal. But the club has been sticking to the player even after such uncertain circumstances as the board would be hoping that there is still light at the end of the tunnel.
