According to Sport (h/t Express), Manchester United are willing to offer Barcelona the deferred wages they owe Frenkie de Jong to bring the midfielder to Old Trafford.

The Catalans made the players take a pay cut during the pandemic. Now, the Spanish giants owe the Dutch midfielder money. But Barcelona supposedly aren’t willing to pay De Jong the full amount.

That’s where Man United come in. The Red Devils have had the 25-year-old on their transfer wishlist since the start of the summer.

The Manchester-based club want to reunite Erik ten Hag with the former Ajax midfielder. In their pursuit, United are willing to sweeten the deal by covering the money Barcelona owe De Jong.

We’ve spent a lot of time going after the Dutch midfielder and haven’t yet seriously looked at alternatives. The 25-year-old doesn’t seem to be keen on a move away from Camp Nou. Hopefully, this gesture will change De Jong’s mind.

United currently have Fred, Scott McTominay, Christian Eriksen, Bruno Fernandes and Donny van de Beek capable of playing in the centre of midfield. But the latter three are more attacking options.

The Brazilian and the Scotsman have regularly featured in the pivot position for the Red Devils for a few years now. With Paul Pogba gone, we don’t have a quality midfielder in the number eight position.

But we do have several youngsters in the squad with the potential to play in the middle of the park. James Garner was good last season for Nottingham Forest. Zidane Iqbal and Charlie Savage have also shown spirit during the pre-season.

De Jong is one of the best midfielders in the world and would be ideal for Man United especially given the arrival of Erik ten Hag. Come to the end of the summer, it remains to be seen if the Dutchman will be donning the famous red jersey.
