Christian Eriksen: Erik ten Hag very important in decision to join Manchester United

Christian Eriksen has admitted that Erik ten Hag was a big factor in him joining Manchester United this summer on a free transfer. The Dutch manager was very influential in the 30-year-old’s decision.

Eriksen returned to the Premier League with Brentford and had a fruitful second half of the season. The Bees took a chance on the Dane, who hadn’t played football since his collapse at Euro 2020.

On being asked how important Ten Hag was in deciding about his future via Manchester Evening News, the 30-year-old admitted that conversations with the Dutch manager guided him.

“I want to come here to play football, I don’t come here just for the logo itself, I want to come here and play.

“Obviously to speak with the manager and hear his ideas and have conversations with him on the football terms was great and ideal for me to get the decision and the possibility of coming to Manchester United.”

Eriksen made a name for himself in England when playing for Tottenham Hotspur for over five years. The Danish national then left for Inter Milan.

The 30-year-old has, throughout his career, played more as an attacking midfielder than any other role. The former Brentford star has the ability to open up defences with his creativity in the final third.

Now, Eriksen has come to Old Trafford to play football and be involved in one of the biggest clubs in the world. The 30-year-old believes Ten Hag’s style of play suits his game.

“I’m a guy who wants to play football and I think with the idea of the manager coming in and the ideas he had and also with my conversations with him, I mean I could see myself playing football in Manchester. And, at the same time, it’s a very, very big club – if not the biggest.

“I think my style of play hopefully fits in with his ideas and hopefully it’s something that will connect in a good and positive way. So of course, his style of football, I think it suits me.”

United have decent options at the moment when it comes to the attacking midfield role. Eriksen has the qualities to be a starter at any big club. But the Red Devils have Bruno Fernandes to count on.

The Portuguese playmaker has been one of our best players over the years, although last season was a bit of a letdown. Ten Hag can also put faith in his former Ajax star Donny van de Beek.

Fans will hope that with the arrival of a new manager, the football and the style of play become much more attractive than in previous years. And Eriksen is a player with the nous to make a difference on the pitch.
